You may have heard of him, but didn't know his name

H.M. died on December 2nd. He was called H.M. to protect his privacy.

If you ever took a psychology class, you probably heard of him. As a young man he'd had brain surgery that inadvertently caused him to lose the ability to create new long-term memories.

Every psych prof I had talked about him like an acquaintance. Someone they'd known, but not well, for a long time.

I never expected to learn his name, which was Henry Gustav Molaison.

I heard the news myself.
I remember in school trying to put myself in his place. It seemed hellish to me.
