Thanks (or blame) go to
markgritter for pointing it out.

His description "It's about robot sapience, the hard work of terraforming, duct tape, and sensible lectures from patient engineers. It has giant baby-mobiles rampaging through the streets, a redecorated lichen museum, and angry mobs. It's about Florence's cute puppy nose sticking out from the covers as she sleeps." intrigued me.
Ship's captain Sam Starfall is a larcenous, scavenging, land-squid in an environment suit.
Co-pilot is a robot sidekick named Helix.
Engineer is a bio-engineered wolf-human crossbreed named Florence who keeps hoping the good example she sets will rub off on Sam.
Many of the comics are funny by themselves, but it's a very tightly woven story that started online in 1998. (I lost several hours of time that I should have spent on homework reading them all.)

I haven't read much of it yet, but it does have some good moments...
