I got a gift subscription to Netflix so I've been rating movies to see what it recommends that I haven't seen.

It recommended Wallace and Grommit Three Amazing Adventures (which I've actually seen) because I've watched and liked: Spirited Away, The Thin Man, Eddie Izzard: Dressed to Kill and Raise the Red Lantern .

It's the last one that got me, I didn't expect there would be that much of an overlap between fans of british clay-mation and brooding modern chinese drama.

I always get the impression that it has a "What you should be watching instead of what's in your queue, ya philistine" AI with a rather arthouse snobbish pesonality. Especially after I threw the Justice League Unlimited series in and it spat back three Akira Kurosawa films at me.

That sort of suggestion is precisely why the system is very good and very bad. I actually like to see the off-kilter suggestions since it has a tendency to broaden the scope of titles I think it's possible I might like. OTOH it is also precisely why they have launched the Netflix Prize to come up with a new/better system.
